Valencian Community Day

The holiday of the Autonomous Community of Valencia (Día de la Comunidad Valenciana) marks the anniversary of the capture by King James I of Aragon of the city of Valencia by Moorish troops in 1238. He captured the city of Valencia on October 9, 1238. Later that year, James I of Aragon created the Kingdom of Valencia, an independent country under his control. Valencia became part of the Kingdom of Spain in 1707. Modern Valencia is autonomous from Madrid. The Valencia region received partial autonomy in 1977 and full autonomy in 1982. It is also St. Dionysius' Day, a traditional holiday of lovers.

Valencia is quite a large cultural center and this holiday is a state one. This means that everyone is walking - schools, businesses and government offices in the autonomous community will be closed.

The International Pyrotechnics Festival takes place in the city of Valencia in early October. The finale of this festival marks the beginning of the celebration of the Valencian Community Day. On October 9, parades are held in the city of Valencia and other towns and villages of the region. The parades are attended by people dressed in costumes, including medieval ones. After the parade, of course, there is a general meal and a party.

October 9 is also the day of Saint Dionysius (Sant Dionís). This saint is traditionally considered the patron saint of lovers, and there is a custom to give Mocaorà - handmade marzipan cakes in the form of local vegetables and fruits made by confectioners of Valencia. Valencian men traditionally give their lovers marzipan candies on this day. These sweets are usually wrapped in a piece of silk or placed in a decorative box.
