Mother's day in Spain

Many people in Spain live with their parents for up to 30-40 years, so the mother plays a very important role in their lives. Spanish mothers are also, as a rule, very attentive and caring, so this creates a strong bond and great love between them and their children, which they celebrate. Mother's Day, known as Dia de la Madre, is celebrated annually in honor of mothers in Spain on the first Sunday of May. It is not a public or Catholic holiday, and most businesses in Spain operate during normal hours. However, shops and restaurants are likely to be crowded on the eve and on the day of the holiday itself.
On Mother's Day, it is customary to give gifts such as chocolate, flowers, postcards, jewelry and clothes. Some families dine out, while others stay at home and celebrate this day with traditional homemade dishes. Many children make gifts and postcards with their own hands.

Mother's Day pays homage to the commitments and achievements that mothers make for their families. Many believe that the celebration comes from the ancient Greek holiday in honor of the goddess Rhea, the mother of Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. After that, the Romans imitated the Greeks and celebrated "Ilaria", a March festival in honor of the goddess Cybele. The early Christians had a feast in honor of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The modern origin of Mother's Day can be attributed to two women in the United States – Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. Currently, Mother's Day is largely promoted by many companies, including manufacturers of postcards and souvenirs, florists and department stores in various countries. Latin countries also have Mother's Day, which is May 10th.
