How Columbus was greeted on the way back

Galicia is a special, northwestern region of Spain, with its own language, cultural traditions and even a separate cuisine. The most famous is peppered octopus pulpo a la gallega and the most delicate cow cheese tetilla. It is also notable for the fact that it was here, in the port of Bayona, that Columbus returned after his famous journey to India. Galicians are zealous patriots of their region and rarely travel beyond its borders, even to neighboring Portugal and France, which are much closer to the capital or the beautiful resorts of Catalonia, the Balearic or Canary Islands. This makes them the best keepers of historical events and local holidays. Santa Maria, que pinta tiene la nina! This exclamation still exists in Spanish and means a compliment to the beauty of a girl. In fact, the proverb ciphers the names of three ships on which Columbus made his expedition to India to discover America, more precisely the island of Haiti (December 6, 1492) The first of his four expeditions was a grand event. On August 3, they left Andalusia, made a stop in Gran Canaria, crossed the Atlantic Ocean and by March 1493 returned back, having lost two of the three ships. Imagine how impatiently and excitedly they waited for the team on the shore! On March 1, 1493, the Pinta caravel entered the port of Bayona. Christopher Garcia Sarmiento, a native of this city, was at the helm, thanks to which it moored here to take shelter from the storm. Taking into account the above, evaluate the significance of this event for Galicians. So Bayona went down in history, becoming the first city whose inhabitants were the first to learn about the existence of the New World. In honor of receiving this news, the Fiesta de la arribada (arrival holiday) appeared. A recreated copy of the Pint stands in the port, and by the memorable date, residents reconstruct the events of five hundred years ago. A medieval market is unfolding in the city, a jousting tournament is held near the walls of the castle, everyone wears costumes in the style of that era. Also on the beach there is a beautiful theatrical performance for everyone, and at special exhibitions you can see all the acquisitions of Europe – then new plants and metals, animals and cultural artifacts of the new world.
