Madrid day

In May it gets hot almost everywhere in Spain, so there are no major holidays this month. Carnivals and Easter have just passed, the country is resting.

However, not in the capital of the Iberian Peninsula, because on May 2nd the whole of Madrid is having fun and partying. You've probably noticed Dos de Mayo in street names all over the country. This is the day of the city, the day of the foundation of the Madjerit fortress by the ruler Emir Muhammad I to protect against Christians who tried to seize these lands in the 9th century (then belonging to Muslim Arabs). Today Madrid is a beautiful sunny city of squares and palaces, of which there are many. In addition, the second of May is the day when in 1808 there was a huge uprising against the French occupiers – Napoleon's army then captured the city.

Madrid City Day is no less impressive than La Merce in Barcelona. Military parades will be organized on the Puerta del Sol, and, of course, concerts, performances, fairs and festivities on all large squares – there will be no district without a fiesta. The museums of Madrid on this day invite you to visit special expositions where there is no access at normal times. Of course, every owner of even the smallest bar will try to surprise guests with some special dish in the festive menu.
