Crop decline in Spain

The news is not comforting. The olive harvest in Valencia is projected to decrease by 75% compared to last year.

The Regional Farmers' Union warns that the decline could lead to huge losses. They want to expand insurance coverage and financial assistance to help manufacturers survive.

Estimates vary by province: from a 68% decrease in Alicante to an 85% decrease in Castellon. According to forecasts, production losses alone will cost the autonomous community 70 million euros. It is expected that in the province of Valencia will lose a total of 25 million euros, in Castellon - 22.6 million, and in Alicante - 21.9 million. In addition, very few olive farmers in the region insure their crops.

Spring was characterized by extreme weather fluctuations, including floods, hail showers and abnormally high and abnormally low temperatures, which caused humidity and frost, respectively. This, in turn, led to massive fungal infection, which led to widespread defoliation; and seriously delayed or slowed down the development of flowers and fruits.

Due to the serious economic consequences that such high production losses can have, the trade union appealed to the large agricultural insurer Agroseguro and the regional Ministry of Agriculture with a request to provide financial incentives and subsidies to olive producers throughout the Valencian community in order to increase insurance coverage in case of such a development. Additional assistance in the amount of 100 euros per hectare of all non-irrigated crops will come into force from January 2023.
